Undated, AL – Alabama native Percy Sledge was recently named to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The soul singer may be known best for his classic single "When a Man Loves a Woman." The song became a hit worldwide in 1966. Sledge was raised in Leighton and will be the third Shoals native inducted into the Hall of Fame. He'll join Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, who was born in Florence, and Grateful Dead vocalist Donna MacKay, who was born in Sheffield. Several well-known musicians who recorded hits in Muscle Shoals also have entered the Hall of Fame. Sledge will join four others as the Class of 2005 -- U-2, The O'Jays, blues guitarist Buddy Guy and The Pretenders.
