Alabama Marks 185 Years as a State

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Tuesday marked the state's 185th anniversary. Alabama became the nation's 22nd state in 1819. Students from Ragland Elementary in Clay County gathered in the state archives building in Montgomery to sing and celebrate. First Lady Patsy Riley says it was a great opportunity for students. Two cakes marked the celebration. One was a large, rectangular cake decorated like the state flag. The other feature red and white colors with flowers.
