The Alabama High School Athletic Association says it is ready to allow home-schooled students to participate in public school sports.
The head of the organization that oversees interscholastic athletic programs for public schools in Alabama says the association will begin creating bylaws early next year.
AHSAA Executive Director Steve Savarese says it's too soon for details but that home-schooled students could be able to play on public school teams as early as the 2016-2017 school year.
State lawmakers in favor of legislation to allow home-schooled students to play say they welcome the association's plan but have doubts about the outcome.
A bill known as the Tim Tebow Act failed to become law during the 2015 legislative session but gained more traction than similar legislation in past years.
