Ryan Vasquez

Ryan Vasquez is a reporter and the APR host of All Things Considered.  

A native of Miramar, Florida, Ryan comes to Alabama Public Radio after graduating from the University of Florida in 2006. While in Gainesville, Ryan worked for a sports-talk radio station as well as a WUFT-TV, but he gained his passion for public radio at Mid-Florida Public Radio. In his nearly eight years in public radio, Ryan has covered such stories as the 2004 and 2008 Presidential Elections, the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill and the deadly April 27th, 2011 outbreak of tornadoes. Ryan has contributed stories to Florida Public Radio, NPR and APM’s Marketplace Morning Report.

Ryan joined Alabama Public Radio in September of 2007. He also contributes to the Telecommunication and Film School at the University of Alabama as an adjunct instructor.

All year long, Alabama Public Radio is collaborating with A-L-dot-com on the Affordable Care Act. The federal deadline to sign-up for health insurance is now well in the rear view mirror and you find yourself without health care. You don’t receive insurance from your employer. You don’t qualify for Medicaid, and you didn’t sign up in the federal marketplace during the open-enrollment. The Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate says that Americans have to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty.

Mobile Sees Alarming Rise In Whooping Cough Cases

Health officials in Mobile say there's been an alarming recent rise in the number of whooping cough cases in the area.

Health officials in Mobile say there's been an alarming recent rise in the number of whooping cough cases in the area.

Whooping cough, the common name for pertussis, is highly contagious. Those infected experience uncontrollable violent coughing that can make it hard to breathe.

Local media reports say the Mobile County Health Department has recorded 18 cases, 10 of which have been confirmed, between May 25 and June 11. Multiple other possible cases were being investigated.

There were just eight confirmed and probable cases in the county last year.

Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore has issued an order saying the offices will be open to the public each day effective July 1.

Circuit clerks' offices are going to reopen on Wednesdays.

Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore has issued an order saying the offices will be open to the public each day effective July 1.

Moore ordered the offices closed to the public on Wednesday beginning in March 2013 because he said understaffing had put the offices behind on recording and filing cases. The employees used Wednesdays to catch up. Now Moore says the backlog in paperwork has been reduced and judges have told them the offices are ready to resume a normal schedule.

Veterans Administration statistics show medical facilities in Montgomery and Tuskegee have some of the nation's longest waits for new patients.

The numbers show VA centers in central Alabama have an average wait time for new patients of 75 days. That's seventh-worst nationally.

Delays are shorter elsewhere in Alabama. The average wait in Tuscaloosa is 47 days, and the Birmingham VA has an average wait of 31 days for new patients.
