Bad Weather Moving Into the State

Undated – The weather is expected to get worse before it gets better Tuesday night. A cold front is on its way, and it's following a line of severe storms. Weather forecasters say expect strong thunderstorms to form in western Alabama after midnight. Meteorologists say tornadoes are possible with this weather system. The state also could experience its first freeze of the season Thursday night once the cold front moves through.

Black Belt Counties Receive Transportation Funds

Washington, DC – Congress has passed a 388 billion dollar spending measure that includes 40 million dollars for Black Belt counties. The money would help with road and transportation projects within the Delta Regional Authority's area. The largest initiative is a 25 million dollar allocation to help with several transportation needs such as roadwork, bridges and buses. Another 15 million dollars will go toward the planning and design of a proposed highway that would stretch from Montgomery to the Mississippi state line.

Gas Prices Continue to Drop

Birmingham, AL – It appears gasoline prices will be a bit lower for the Thanksgiving holiday travel period. Triple-A Alabama's daily survey shoes gas prices dropped again Tuesday. The average for regular gas is a dollar-88. Mid-grade fuels cost about two-dollars-one cent per gallon, and premium is averaging two-dollars-seven-cents. Huntsville has overtaken Mobile as the major city with the most expensive gas. Regular costs about a dollar-92 there. Birmingham still has the cheapest gas, though, at a dollar-84.

Montgomery Named Fire Marshal

Montgomery, AL – Acting state Fire Marshal Richard Montgomery has been appointed to the position permanently. The news came from Alabama Insurance Commissioner Walter Bell. Montgomery has been with the office for nearly 22 years and has been acting fire marshal since January. He also has served north Alabama as an assistant fire marshal. Montgomery is a native of Moulton.

Leftover Flu Shots Will Be Offered in December

Montgomery, AL – Health department workers across the state say they now have leftover flu shots. A vaccine shortage had left Alabama about 300,000 doses short of being able to vaccinate the state's elderly, sick and very young. But after last week's flu shot clinics, state Health Officer Don Williamson says about 16,000 shots are left over. Jefferson County accounts for almost half that amount, with 7,000 unused shots. Williamson says the shots will be offered again in December but, again, only to people in high-risk categories.

Former First Lady Hunt Dies

Cullman, Alabama – Former Alabama first lady Helen Hunt died Monday from a pulmonary disease. She was 70.

Bill Floyd, chairman of the Cullman County Republican Party, says Mrs. Hunt had been treated at Woodland Medical Center since Nov. 13 for pulmonary fibrosis. The condition robs the lungs of their ability to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream.
