Washington, AL – President Bush will tour Alabama this weekend to see first-hand the destruction of Hurricane Ivan. The White House says Bush will tour Lower Alabama and Florida on Sunday. At least 20 deaths have been blamed on Ivan so far, with more than one million residents without power. Power companies say it could be days or weeks before power is restored to all.
Alabama – Alabama Army National Guard armories in the state have been opened as shelters for persons evacuating from Hurricane Ivan.
Guard officials said armories will be open indefinitely for persons needing temporary shelter as a result of the hurricane. Although the armories will have areas for sleeping and restroom facilities, evacuees using the armories as temporary shelter must bring their own sleeping bags or other type bedding and food. The National Guard will not be able to furnish food, cots or other items of this type.
