ADEM Cites Anniston Incinerator

Anniston, AL – The Alabama Department of Environmental Management has cited the Anniston Army Depot's chemical weapons incinerator for regulatory violations. Incinerator site manager Timothy Garrett says the violations do not affect the public. He says they are "primarily administrative," and he and other managers will review and improve incinerator procedures. The Army has 30 days to officially respond to ADEM. The Army is using the incinerator to destroy about 22-hundred tons of chemical weapons that are stored at the Depot.

Hostile Fire Killed Alabama Soldier

Alexander City, AL – Another Alabama soldier has been killed in Iraq. The Defense Department reports 21-year-old Lance Corporal John T- Sims Junior of Alexander City was killed April 10th. Sims died when he came under hostile fire in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq, which is west of Baghdad. Sims was assigned to the Second Battalion, Fourth Marine Regiment, First Marine Division of the First Marine Expeditionary Force. He was based at Camp Pendleton, California.

University of Alabama Students Become All Americans

Tuscaloosa, AL – In 2003, the University of Alabama placed 5 students on the USA Today Academic All American Team. In February, USA Today announced the 2004 team, which included 4 students from the University of Alabama. The University's two year total of 9 students is one ahead of Harvard University, and 3 more than Johns Hopkins University. Alabama Public Radio's Bobby Puppione has this story.
