Third District Congressional Candidates Will Debate

Anniston, AL – Incumbent Republican Congressman Mike Rogers and his Democratic challenger Bill Fuller have agreed to two debates. They'll meet on October 22nd at the Speculative Industrial Building in Anniston. The second debate is scheduled for October 25th at Central Alabama Community College in Alexander City. Organizers say the debates will last about 45 minutes. Both are campaigning in Alabama's third congressional district.

Shelby Announces 50 Million Dollars for Transportation Project

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby has announced that 50 million dollars has been approved for the Delta Region Transportation Development program. Shelby says the money will go toward toward several regional projects, including a study of composite materials for use in mass transit systems and a UAB study of vehicle crash injuries. The program also provides priority consideration of reconstruction between the cities of Cuba and Montgomery.

State School Board Wants Students in School

Montgomery, AL – The state school board has proposed a new truancy policy that would require parents or guardians to explain every student absence. Currently there is no statewide truancy policy. But under the new plan, students or their parents could be taken to court and charged with truancy violations after seven unexcused absences. The board has unanimously approved the resolution and plans to submit the regulations to the state. The changes could take effect as early as November.

10 Million Dollar Expansion of Lanett Plant Brings New Jobs

Lanett, AL – A 10 million dollar expansion of the MeadWestvaco Packaging Systems plant in Lanett is expected to bring 55 new jobs into the area. Governor Riley says the Lanett plant was chosen over Atlanta and Chicago locations. The Lanett plant will get a second central impression press line installed as well as related support equipment. The plant currently employs more than 170 people. The new press is expected to start up by next March.
