Fewer State Residents Tying the Knot

Montgomery, AL – Fewer Alabama residents are getting married, and there are also fewer married couples getting divorced. New statistics from the Alabama Center for Health Statistics say that both state and national numbers show that people are putting off getting married until their late 20s. Experts also say divorces are down partly because fewer people are getting married. They also say older couples with established jobs are less likely to face financial problems, and that's a major cause of divorces.

Web Site Targets College-Bound Students

Montgomery, AL – A new Web site is available to help college-bound students in the state. The site offers information on everything from how to fill out financial aid applications to what courses to take while still in high school. www.Alabamamentor.org is sponsored by the Alabama Student Loan Program. It also allows students to compare grades and test scores with the admission requirements of colleges and universities in the state.

Bruno's is Sold to Texas Company

Birmingham, AL – A deal announced Thursday will give an Alabama-based grocery chain a new owner. Bruno's, which is based in Birmingham, will belong to Dallas-based Lone Star Funds. The grocery chain's current owner, Royal Ahold, chose to sell Bruno's and the BI-LO grocery chain. It will allow Royal Ahold to cut debts after an accounting scandal forced the company to restate its earnings. The deal is expected to close early next year. It's worth 560 million dollars in cash.

Riley E-mails Video Message to Troops

Montgomery, AL – Governor Bob Riley has prepared a video message for Alabama's soldiers who are deployed overseas. And, he's sending it to them through e-mail. The governor tells the soldiers that all Alabamians are proud of them and thankful for their service. He also says soldiers should contact Operation Grateful Heart if they or their families need assistance. The initiative coordinates state services with community projects to support troops and their families.
